christie is seeking to take a page from george w. bush's playbook and emerge as an even stronger 2016 presidential candidate. governor christie aiming for the widest republican margin of victory since tom keen won 69% of the vote back in 1985. and another long-term trend could be broken tomorrow. since virginia and new jersey vote together, it would be the first time, that the two states have elected governors from different parties since 1985. a lot of history there. joining me now, nbc news senior political editor mark murray and also senior washington correspondent for politico. i'll start with you mark. let's first talk about virginia. as i said, a 30-year trend seems to be on its way to being broken. >> well, right, of course the marquis contest is the gubernatorial race where terry mccalliffe is in the driver's seat. may be the closest contest will be the state attorney general's race between mark herring and mark o ben shane, the polling we've seen on attorney generals race is a little tougher. the polling we've seen it is very close. democrats do have the chance for a sweep. a
in support of mcauliffe. and over in new jersey, chris christie is barn storming the state in these final 48 hours before election day. kelly o'donnell is on the trail with governor christie and he tells her he's less concerned about winning than he is by how much. >> no republican in this state has gotten 50% plus one since george bush. so we're going for 50 percent plus one. anything boabove that is a message. >> on the phone is kelly o'donnell. kelly, very good afternoon to you. what's the energy like so far on the trail and from the conversations that you've had with governor christie? >> good afternoon. there is excitement when governor christie is going from event to event and we've been watching him now for a couple of days. to y you do get the sense people are excited to see him. everyone wants their photo taken with him. so there is good energy. and in talking with voters, democrats even like him. he's a well-known national figure. they seem excited about that. we've encountered some critics of the governor and they have occasionally shouted out at him as we're along the trail, that

, the romney/ryan ticket was almost a romney/christie ticket. the new jersey governor was on mitt romney short list not once but -- >> twice. >> the reason it didn't go much farther? >> he had christie on the first short list. he crosses his name off. he's leaning towards paul ryan. >> reporter: romney's advisers pressured him to reconsider chris christie. in the end there were two obstacles. christie couldn't keep his day job and fund raise due to new jersey law and the book says he wasn't as forthcoming in the vetting process as other candidates. now, beth meyers, a long-time aide to mitt romney said to the "new york times" that chris christie complied fully in the vetting process but when you look at what "the new york times" is reporting about this book, the unanswered questions just kind of go on and on, about a defamation lawsuit against the governor from earlier in his political career as well as the names and documentation of his household employees. as well as information about his medical history. there's even more than that, chris. >> boy, oh, boy, that book probably going to sell f
creating a lot of buzz and complications for new jersey governor chris christie. who's in the middle of a re-election campaign. >> that's right, the book is called double down. republican nominee mitt romney considered tapping christie as a running mate. but declined over fears of his temper, medical history and spending. let's bring in george stephanopoulos, who has a show coming up this morning, is this likely to hurt governor christie as he contemplates a run for president? >> i'm not sure. one of the things it shows tension between governor christie and mitt romney. and mitt romney's campaign. christie is the future. mitt romney's campaign is the past. they did leaked all kinds of information from his vetting file. it's pretty clear from this book that governor romney had a lot of questions about chris christie, he said that he was always showing up late for events, was arrogant, and even making fun of his weight. but i don't think so. and we're what seeing with governor christie right now, he is cruising to re-election tuesday in new jersey. republican in a blue state. probably
christie a year later, how is he doing? >> pretty well. as you know a year is an eternity in politics but chris christie, his boost from that response to superstorm sandy still resonates. like the skilled politician he is, he's leveraging it. he is playing on his reputation as an all-business take no prisoners problem solver. on the an verse of stormy. chris christie's response to last year's disaster, when he was seemingly at every damaged boardwalk, every flooded basement, side-by-side with the democratic president, enhanced his political image immeasurably. >> this showed not only was he a fighter, was he tough and tell the truth, but he can work with somebody and can work with somebody across the aisle. >> that reassurance to victims government was working for them still resonates strongly after the government shutdown. >> there are a lot of people now looking at washington as dysfunctional. will is a lot of people looking at washington as not being focused on big solutions. and i think the proceed fail he has built in the time since sandy as governor is one focus order big proble

conversation with new jersey governor chris christie permitting he was the face of disaster response but we begin with elaine quijano in seaside heights, new jersey. elaine, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, charlie and norah and viewers in the west. sandy was the biggest and fiercest storm ever to hit new jersey, costing the state nearly $40 billion in damage. recovery has been slow and for many it's far from over. when superstorm sandy slammed ashore last october, more than 100 miles of new jersey's coastline bore the brunt of it. communities split in half homes crushed, others simply washed away. in seaside heights the same boardwalk and heart of the shore town's economy took a pounding. >> this is our lives, how we feed our family, support ourselves. >> reporter: mike carbone had to completely rebuild the first and second floors of his restaurant after the storm. almost a year later, tragedy struck again. fast-moving flames destroyed nearly 70 businesses along the boardwalk in september. authorities blamed the fire on electrical wiring damaged by sandy. >> on t
